Underbelly The Golden Mile Review and Forum

Some audience will bag the new series of Underbelly The Golden Mile for glorifying villains and violence. But people have to remember that it is a TV show no different that most American dramas we see on Australian TV and I personally think it is more entertaining than most other Australian made crap like Thank God You're Here, The Seven PM Project, The Footy Shows, Rove and The Panel.

I believe Underbelly The Golden Mile will appeal more to Sydney residents than other cities as everyone know about Kings Cross.

A note about the production of Underbelly The Golden Mile, I was working in the Cross in some of these clubs as a DJ and barman from the early to late 90s and met some of the characters. Showgirls was not around in 1989. Showgirls is in the same location as the old Pink Panther, when the Pink Panther was closed down the premises were renovated and reopened as Showgirls but you can see both clubs in Underbelly. Also LED open signs were not around in the late 80s but you can see one on a shop front. You'd think channel 9 would pay more attention to these things.

The first two episodes are off to a slow start and were riddled with commercials here in Sydney last night. I will be watching over the next weeks to see how the story unfolds.

So we've seen few more episodes so far what do you think of this series? I am personally waiting to see how the story involves the characters I knew like Steve Hardis, Skinny Steve and Fatty Steve.

I must say even though I worked in Kings Cross between 1994 and 1997 my path never crossed the John Ibrahim and the other characters. That's because I never paid attention to the wheeling and dealing that was going on, I was a DJ playing music in clubs like Illusion and Nugaties then I worked as a barman in the Pink Pussy Cat, Pink Panther and Showgirls and at one stage I was the cashier at Stripperrama.

Few weeks has gone past and I lost interest in this show. I already missed the last few episodes. The slow pace of the story and the overdose of advertisements just put me off. Watching some Australian TV shows is like torture, the minute you start getting into the story comes an advertisement. We may as well be watching advertisements with a show break
